As we await the Annapolis Blues soccer season, we asked the women’s head coach Ashly Kennedy to field our burning questions. This is a historic year for the women as they kick off their inaugural season!
In a crab shell, Ashly brings head coaching experience from Christos Women’s USLW, Archbishop Spalding, and Elite Clubs National League. She’s also a former Terp and St. Mary’s High soccer player with an impressive list of accolades.
We can’t wait to see Coach Ashly on the pitch. Speaking of which, grab your tickets to the home opener on May 31!
How does it feel to be part of Annapolis Blues history as the first-ever head coach of the women’s team?
It’s incredibly humbling and honestly a bit surreal. I grew up in Annapolis, so to step into this role with the support of lifelong friends and the local community means the world to me. I still don’t think the full weight of this opportunity has fully sunk in — the impact it’s having on me personally and hopefully on soccer fans across the region.
Coaching has always been my passion. It’s where I feel most confident and inspired, and now I get to do it in the place I proudly call home. That’s a really heartfelt feeling. I’m committed to giving everything I have — to my players, my staff, and most importantly, the Annapolis community. Being part of this chapter in Blues history is something I’ll carry with great pride.
What drew you to this role?
I’ve always been someone who embraces challenges and remains open to new opportunities when the timing feels right. Over the years, I’ve coached at various levels, and when General Manager Jim Gabarra reached out to me about this role, it immediately stood out. The vision, the resources being invested into the players, and the overwhelming community support — especially for the women’s game — truly resonated with me.
What has moved me is the number of fans who’ve gone out of their way to introduce themselves and share their excitement for the women’s team. It fills my heart because it shows that this isn’t just about building a team — it’s about empowering the game and creating a platform with a community that genuinely supports and believes in our mission.
How is the team looking?
I’m incredibly excited about the talent we have on this roster. What makes it even more special is about 85% of our players are local Maryland athletes — many of whom have made a name for themselves across generations in the local and regional soccer scene.
This is my fourth year coaching in the USLW, and without a doubt, this is the most skilled, competitive, and cohesive group I’ve had the privilege to work with. The quality on the field, combined with the pride they bring representing their home state, sets a powerful tone for what we’re building here.
Are you coaching any of your former players?
Yes, I’m coaching quite a few former players, which has been a really special experience. Having coached both club and high school soccer in the area, I’ve had the opportunity to work with many of these athletes earlier in their careers. Players like Sarah Martin, Courtney Corcoran, Sophie Thibeault, Zoe Vidaurre, and Delaney DeMartino are just a few who I’ve had the privilege of coaching before and now get to work with again at this level.
What players are you expecting big things from and why?
I truly believe that players rise when they’re presented with the right challenges and are given the confidence to step into their potential. I hold all my players to a high standard of accountability, but this group is filled with talent from top to bottom. My goal is for each player to take ownership of their journey and their impact on the field. I want them to earn their credibility while knowing they have the full support of the coaching staff behind them. I’m confident several will rise to the occasion in their own way.
What are some goals for the inaugural season?
One of my biggest goals is to build a strong and lasting connection between the team and the Annapolis community. I want both the players and staff to take every opportunity to engage, inspire, and help unify this city around the Blues. Whether that’s through community events, youth outreach, or being visible role models — we want to create something bigger than soccer.
And, of course . . . WIN!
On the field, we’re committed to building a competitive, high-quality product that reflects the passion and skill of our players. But just as importantly, we want to set a foundation rooted in community, culture, and pride in what it means to wear this crest.
Are you a Ted Lasso fan?
Absolutely — best show ever! I’m a huge Ted Lasso fan. It’s funny, heartwarming, and really captures the human side of coaching and leadership.
