But MDRF let us come hang out with vendors, performers, maintenance crew, and staff to see what it’s like before the crowds. Dylan, Mackenzie, and Chelsea (all low-key MDRF fans) got to see just how much work it takes to get ready for the Faire folk. Here are some fun observations (but also be sure to check out our Instagram too, to see the behind-the-scenes scenes )
- There’s a lot that goes on behind the scenes! While it’s fun to believe we’re all magically transported back to a different time and place when we step through those gates, the real magic is all the work put in by so many artisans, performers, business owners, maintenance crews, and so many others. Most of the Fest team we talked to live on-site throughout the festival, either staying in apartments above their shops or camping on the grounds behind Revel Grove’s façade. And before you ask — no, it’s not an ongoing party after festivalgoers leave. Most vendors and performers are tired after a long day and want to get some rest before doing it all again!
- One of the cool things about Ren Fest is how you can watch artists at work. They start the season with enough inventory for a good display, but many have to continuously restock throughout the season as they sell. This means crafting right there on site — so as you’re doing some shopping for one-of-a-kind items, you’ll get to watch jewelry making, glassblowing, metalworking, woodcarving, sculpting, stitching, and more.
- The Ren Fest community wants to make you feel welcome exactly as you are, whether you’re somebody who comes in costume every day or a first-timer who showed up in 21st century street clothes. Part of the fun is playing along and remembering to useth thy “thees” and “thous” when talking, but you don’t have to — and vendors are prepared to engage with you however you feel comfortable.
- While visiting MDRF is a fun escape for Faire-goers, this is work for the folks behind the booth and on stage. There are signs to paint, costumes to repair, straw to lay on footpaths, trash to collect, inventory to restock, etc. Many of the performers have a full performance schedule throughout the year, and once they move on from Maryland, it’s on to other states or countries and other shows! So it’s nice to keep in mind that when you’re shopping the shops and attending the performances, you’re supporting lots of small businesses! On the same note, when you’re in the shops and at the faire, this is the MDRF team’s home for 9 weeks, so it’s nice to be on thy best behavior, as gentle lords and ladies.
Enjoy the Faire!
