Maryland's famous for its crabcakes. And as the most beautiful waterfront city in the state, Annapolis has some pretty good ones. So Naptown Scoop publisher Ryan Sneddon and Atlantic Prime Mortgage's Wes Tower (as well as some other occasional stars) are on a mission to find out who has the best one.
Naptown Scoop Crabcake Reviews are proudly sponsored by Blue Heron Property Services - The House Wash Pros.
This list is updated regular during the summer. It is ranked in order according to the Proprietary Super Secret Naptown Scoop Crab Cake Composite Score (PSSNSCCCS) – aka the average of Wes and Ryan's scores.
A Wes Score of 9.3 and a Ryan Score of 9.4 formerly made Dock Street the top dog. But a strong performance from the Edgewater Restaurant has created a tie for the top spot. Price: $32.
Boatable: Yes, public docking is available on Ego Alley just steps from Dock Street Bar and Grill. Don't forget to pay the harbormaster.
Address: 136 Dock St, Annapolis, MD 21401
I love everything about this place. It feels like walking back in time. The staff are so friendly. The homemade desserts are just sitting on a table ready to be grabbed (covered so everything's sanitary).
And then there's the crabcake. It is absurdly good and somehow only $23. The only way I can describe it is that it tastes like you think something might when it's introduced as "my great grandmother's secret recipe." If it even is written down, this crabcake recipe needs to be forever preserved in the National Archives or something.
Ryan gave this a score of 9.8 which is his highest ever.
Boatable: No.
Address: 148 Mayo Rd, Edgewater, MD 21037
If we gave points for atmosphere this would be #1. In my opinion this is the quintessential Annapolis restaurant. I've been dozens of times and I see something new on the wall every time.
Boatable: No.
Address: 400 Fourth St, Annapolis, MD 21403
By far the best view you can enjoy while eating a crabcake. Always ask for an outside seat upstairs.
Boatable: Yes, Choptank has reserved docking on Ego Alley.
Address: 110 Compromise St, Annapolis, MD 21401
Two very different but very good crabcakes. Pirates Cove's cakes are small with a huge flavor. Double T's cakes are ginormous but still have tons of flavor.
Boatable: Double T, no. Pirates Cove, yes. Pirates Cove has its own slips.
Addresses:
Double T - 12 Defense St, Annapolis, MD 21401
Pirates Cove - 4817 Riverside Dr, Galesville, MD 20765
Market House may be a little intimidating to some people because it's not a traditional restaurant. Do not let that keep you away. These crabcakes are great and presented beautifully on the plate. Get a fresh, homemade Smith Island Cake for dessert like we did!
Boatable: Yes. Bring something under 17 feet and use the Ego Alley dinghy dock or side dock on the main seawall and pay the harbormaster.
Address: 25 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401
Don't sit inside like we did. Outside is where it's at here. I dare you to do the bang-bang like guest reviewer Captain Chris and I did. Pirates Cove is just up the street. . . .
Boatable: Yes. Stan & Joe's has lots of slips.
Address: 4851 Riverside Dr, Galesville, MD 20765
Note: This review is a double so you'll have to watch Pirates Cove first to get to the Stan & Joe's part of the video
Cantler's is an absolute Annapolis classic for crabs. Getting a crabcake here is like going to a Toyota dealership to buy a Honda. Get the fresh steamed crabs! They'll even teach you how to open them. If you don't come by boat, take a field trip downstairs to see the tanks of live crabs.
Boatable: Yes. Cantler's has its own slips.
Address: 458 Forest Beach Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409
McGarvey's is another Annapolis classic. Definitely get the Aviator beer (McGarvey's house brew).
Boatable: Yes, public docking is available on Ego Alley just steps from McGarvey's. Don't forget to pay the harbormaster.
Address: 8 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401
Blackwall Hitch is a great spot for lively weekend music (read the Scoop to see their schedule). But their crabcake is pretty good too. I really liked the sides that came with this one but it had a little too much filler.
Boatable: No.
Address: 400 Sixth St, Annapolis, MD 21403
This honestly should probably be higher on the list but it was the second place we rated and I'm not sure we had things dialed in yet. It's a huge crabcake in a classic atmosphere. Will probably have a crazy wait on weekends in the summer and will definitely be worth it. Save room for a milkshake!
Boatable: Kinda. Public docking is available on Ego Alley so pretty much any downtown restaurant can be boatable but you won't be able to see your boat from Chick & Ruth's.
Address: 165 Main St, Annapolis, MD 21401.
Iron Rooster breaks the crabcake rules so we can't truly give it a ranking. Ryan thought everyone would know he was joking when he gave it a 10 but they did not. Anyhow, Iron Rooster's "Cakes on cakes" dish (crabcakes over pancakes) is not your average crabcake but it is quite good and highly recommended by Wes and Ryan.
Boatable: Yes. Public docking is available on Ego Alley so pretty much any downtown restaurant can be boatable.
Address: 12 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401
It was here that Ryan invented a new scale of rating crabcakes.
Carroll's Creek serves Tier 2 cakes with a Tier 1 view.
Boatable: Yes. But Carroll's Creek doesn't have its own slips. You'll have to use transient slips at Annapolis City Marina so they aren't free (rates here) and they aren't dedicated to the restaurant.
Address: 410 Severn Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403
Davis' Pub is amazing for a lot of things – crab pretzels, pork burrito specials on Tuesdays, having a few too many with your best friends. . . . Unfortunately we can't in good conscience put crab cakes on that list.
Boatable: No.
Address: 400 Chester Ave, Annapolis, MD 21403
This is a better crabcake than the ranking shows. As you'll see in the video, the flavor and size are there. But it wasn't hot all the way through for both Ryan and Podcast Phil (who was Philling in for a vacationing Mortgage Wes). If it had been, this is a mid-eights crabcake all day long.
Boatable: Yes. Public docking is available on Ego Alley so pretty much any downtown restaurant can be boatable.
Address: 22 Market Space, Annapolis, MD 21401
