TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Annapolis. With the World Cup going on, we are going to attempt to explain the most confusing thing in sports for us Americans. Being offside in soccer (yes, it is singular) is just like being offside in hockey. Except the last defender is like a moving blue line and whether a play is offside or not is determined at the time of the pass, not when the ball crosses the line.

If you don’t know hockey, that won’t help you at all. Sorry.

In today’s Naptown Scoop:

  • West Marine closing in Edgewater

  • FS8 expanding to Annapolis

  • New restaurant on Riva Road

Let’s get to it.

PIPE DREAM

Anne Arundel firefighters rescue puppy from storm drain 🐶 🚒

Photo: Anne Arundel County Fire Department

I’m not sure I’d think to call the fire department if I heard a dog in a storm drain but I’m this person did. A West Annapolis fire crew responded to a call on Tuesday for reports of some very quiet barking.

When they removed a storm drain cover, they found a small dog stuck inside. So they saved it, wrapped it in a warm towel, and brought it to the station. There it was given the temporary name “Bull” and fed every dog’s dream – a firehouse cheeseburger.

A local vet clinic scanned Bull for a microchip before Anne Arundel County Animal Services picked her up (Bull was later revealed to be a female) where she’s now safe and sound. This is where you come in.

Know who she belongs to? Forward this email to them and let’s get her home! We’d also like to shout out the Anne Arundel County Fire Department for their excellent work. This isn’t even the first time we’ve written about them saving a dog this year.

Anne Arundel Fire and Annapolis Fire worked together back in January to save a chocolate lab who’d gotten stranded on a frozen over Luce Creek.

County Council overrides seven of Pittman's zoning vetoes 🏛️

Monday night, Anne Arundel's County Council did the rarest thing in local politics (ok, all politics): it agreed. Both parties, same side, seven times in a row.

The council voted to override seven of County Executive Steuart Pittman's vetoes of zoning changes for Region 5 — the Crofton, Gambrills, Odenton, and Two Rivers area — clearing the way for denser development on those parcels.

Council Chair Julie Hummer suggested the vetoes were political. Pittman is term-limited and has endorsed his special assistant, James Kitchin, in next week's Democratic primary for county executive. Two of Kitchin's rivals, Allison Pickard and Pete Smith, sit on the council and had to vote on the overrides themselves. Republican Nathan Volke chalked the whole thing up to Pittman's "sour grapes."

  • Pittman's side: He argued zoning "is not about enriching land speculators," singling out two Odenton amendments that upzone 27 acres of rural land and 137 acres of open space near Two Rivers.

And that’s about as political as we get at Scoop. Back to the fun stuff.

Why do 90% of Annapolis Symphony Orchestra’s subscribers renew year after year?

It's more than the music. Although a 75-piece professional orchestra is a sight (and sound) to behold. And yet, there's so much more.

🪑 It's the seat: subscribers choose theirs before a single public ticket is sold. Sometimes seats stay in families for generations.

🎫 It's also the price: subscribers get the best pricee and a 20% discount on extra tickets.

👫But mostly, it's the community. Subscribers see friends and neighbors at shows. Nothing brings people together like shared experiences. This is the greatest perk of a subscription.

The Annapolis Symphony Orchestra Season 65 Signature Season Subscription includes five iconic and unforgettable live music performances. Become a subscriber today. The season starts October 2.
